Please Smile?

I'm not one for portrait studios, but I do want some *Christmas Photos* to shove in the cards we mail out. Not too much of a demand, right?

Some of us aren't so sure!

So I've been working all week to get something I'm happy with. Today I finally resorted to bribery. I went all in!

(She really thought that would work! Ha!)

I brought out the marshmallows. I was handing them out slowly, but it quickly escalated. Soon they wanted more fluffy goodness per set of photos, then more frequently. So I withdrew my marshmallow offer, instead offering them a BIG MARSHMALLOW but only AFTER we finished.

I was left with this.

Sigh. Tomorrow's another day...

Creative Thursday

I'm linking up with Marcia for some show and tell!

This was a homemade birthday gift! I'm so tickled with how it turned out. I'm disappointed it took me sooo long to actually make one. It's been on my to-do list for the ladies for ages.

Isn't it great? It's double sided too!

Stitched like a pro!

I should really start the ladies.

For the gift I wrapped it with a jar of homemade cookie mix and a spoon.

This was the ladies' first 'friend' party and I was torn on gift giving. I really like the bought/made combo. It gives me a gift for each child, and I'm not littering someone else's house with toys upon toys!

Would you be happy to give or receive something like this?

I was so happy to make it!

Here Comes The Wah-bulance!

Oh yes, I am in full whine mode. FML FML FML! This isn't fair and I'm going to kick, stomp, and scream!

I know everything always happens at once, and it's never at a convenient time, but WHY ME?? WHY NOW? Waaaaaah!!

Hopefully the ladies don't pick up all the wonderfulness that has been flowing from my mouth. Mother of the year right here! I can't wait for life to settle down and I can reabsorb all the happy-go-lucky baby mojo.

So the car is ready to move to the great beyond. I was soooo relieved to hear that it wasn't my fault, it was simply high mileage. I'll be happier still tomorrow when someone comes to fix the heat! I learned last night that heaters are like hair dryers and will blow your fuses in the blink of an eye!

Dear Old House,
Please be gentle on me this winter. Please, please, please!
Signed,
The Woman Saddled With Your Deed

I'm amazed the ladies are oblivious to the house being cold. We came home today to a house that was sitting at 60 degrees. Not frigid, but they kicked their coat and shoes off and got settled in playing. I however was working off some stress and frantically cleaning the house to keep warm.

Am I the only who stress cleans?

I'll be doing some more cleaning tomorrow while I waste what will most likely be hours waiting for the repair men. Then I can waste more hours car shopping and whine about money. I'll probably also waste time waiting for my phone replacement. I'll also whine about the cost of that. Before I know it, it will be Thursday where I'll wait to see the eye doctor, with two children in tow. Followed immediately by more whining about the cost of frames. Time is money, money is time.

All these first world problems are wearing me down!

Sometimes you need to remind yourself how fortunate you are to have such problems.

The Last 96

I was looking forward to today to be my fresh start. So in the last 96 hours I have:

  • learned that our car is almost not worth repairing
  • loosely decided to buy a new car
  • FIXED THE DRYER
  • lost heating in the house again
  • dropped and cracked my phone

F.M.L.

Are you kidding me? Really? Come on! I went all crazy with the thankfulness and planned out my advent business. I've been a good girl and I really don't believe in this end of the world business but I just might start!

Friday I put the car in the shop. It started making a little noise and I was hopeful a little noise was a little problem. There was even a black friday sale with $100 off repairs! GREAT! I know the car is getting older, and that it has more miles than it should, but they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it?! I need to go to a different shop no where near my house or the crazy over-priced dealer? It might be a medium or ginormous problem?! Not a problem friend, I've got time for that!

Then Saturday morning I woke up, AGAIN, to a chilly house. I got a little over confident and decided that since this happened before, I should clearly know how to fix it. Cold house = no fire in the boiler. Makes sense right?! That was the problem before and all I have to do is light the pilot. So I truck it to the basement full of SuperMoM spirit only to find that the pilot isn't out. The boiler is running, has fire, and is circulating cold water. WTH? You have fire, heat my house!! Did I mention it's now in the 40's and upper 30's now? Yay for bricks that stay warm!

DH and I have been back and forth, and by back and forth I mean I'm back and forth and he is "yes dear"-ing me to the moon and back over this car situation. I really like not having a car payment. REALLY LIKE IT. I really like eating out, and taking random trips, and not giving money to someone for something that is taking money from me already! Oy! Do you sink money into an old car or cut your losses and buy new? I won't get money for a dying car, so I was thinking used, but then am I trading problems with someone? Argh, just what I wanted before Christmas! Although the prospect of having heated seats again is swaying me hard!

Lastly, while we're out for our pre-nap walk today I was annoyed by my phone going off. I knew it was just DH saying ok and that I didn't need to respond but it was dinging at me so I pulled it out. Pulling lead to dropping. Dropping on concrete. Shattering my screen. But look at the bright side, I only have to pay more than what I paid for the phone as a deductible. Thankfully it still works, maybe I could live with it for a little while. Maybe a new phone AND a better case for Christmas?! Think of me tomorrow Marcia when you're holding your new phone!

So how have your last 96 hours been?

Rainbows and unicorns??

The silver lining to all this is that I did fix the dryer. Now I can have warm clothes and blankets for my cold house! Yes, I did only do it to say that I fixed something! I couldn't take much more breaking before I broke down.

Grrrr..... I'll be thankful when November is over!

Now back to my scheduled advent planning...

Thankful Tree

So we did it. I stuck to it. I REALLY loved it.

I'm not sure it would be nearly as entertaining with children of a different age. I'm sure it would be more thoughtful, but for now cute is working for me! The ladies each chose a color and we did one every day that we were together.

Of course I tried to harp on the true meaning of being thankful and really tried to instill how fortunate they are. That seemed to really hit home when I told them some children don't have food to eat and they're always hungry. I might have implored them to make more of an effort to eat what is presented to them as well. :)

Thomas Matching Game, because games wouldn't suffice.

Food because I'm so hungry. Clearly I starve them.

Someone agrees our house is warm!

I did make an effort to guide them more towards the end, giving them specific areas in which they might be thankful. HAM offered her parents as something she was thankful for, Every.Single.Day. I guess she must love them a lot! However I didn't make it onto the tree until today, our last day! Nice ladies, thanks.

Uncle Tim joined in our shenanigans!

As for me, I'm currently most thankful for my belated Valentine's gift!! Conveniently schedule for the day before next Valentine's day!

Anyone else feeling fortunate and thankful?
I know I am!

Now to finish up Turkey Day and officially begin the holiday rush. I'm not feeling festive at all, but I would like to finish things up early for once so I'll be jumping on Deanna's bandwagon. See what you've started, Deanna?! Part of my list will be to set up an advent calendar.

We didn't do advent growing up. So I'm making this up as I go alone, but I'd love some input. I loved the counting down aspect of our thankful tree and it adds to our morning time routine. I'm completely opposed to turning this into pre-gaming for Christmas so there won't be little toys and treats everyday. Instead I'm thinking of leaving cards that list crafts, activities, and other things we need to prepare for Christmas. Things like getting and setting up a tree, making cards and ornaments, and sorting and donating our old toys! This is a big deal because we have a closet full of toys the ladies have yet to receive!!

So were you an advent kid? How far off am I? Am I creating therapy bills?!

November Photo Challenge: B&W

Today was such a busy day! Work, party, delivery, car nap, dinner out, store, and now waiting for two ladies to tire themselves out a bit. Everyone should be so fortunate.

Some nice, tranquil photos to mellow out the evening...

This is really a vibrant red tree with the sunshine shining brightly.

Just a dash of color for definition.

Enjoy!
Tell me your favorites and make sure you check out Marcia's post!

Someone Else's Kid

I'm not a completely heartless mother. Just mostly.

When my kids fall, save for potentially serious incidents, I try REALLY HARD to brush it off. I am all about shaking it off, walking it off, and giggling it off. However, this only applies to my kids. When it is someone else's kid I'm all over the situation.

And when someone else's kid is mangled while in my care, I feel pretty terrible. This is an understatement of massive proportions.

An Manny fail!

Thankfully there won't a zillion pictures tomorrow. Oh wait. There will be.

Yes kids will be kids. Bumps and bruises are part of growing up. But it's so much easier to handle when it's not someone else's kid!

Progress & Goals

We have heat! Hooray!

Thankfully it was a simple, AND FREE, fix. I chatted up the repairmen, he gave me guidance in fixing the dryer as well. I also made plans for the car to go to the shop and suck me of more money. Four things off my list!

I'm also fairly sure the mouse has vacated the premises but I'm not jinxing anything...

All this list scratching reminded me I never did my November goals. Since we're half way through the month I don't have much hope of extraordinary accomplishments, so I'll take it even easier on myself if that is possible.

October Goals: 77% accomplished!

I would have died getting a C in should, but I'll gladly take it here!

For November I'm not sure where to start...

November Goals:

Family

  • Eye Appointments
  • Dinner
  • Distribute Christmas lists
  • Start the Christmas card production

House

  • Porch Carpet
  • Living Room Baseboard Trim

Crafts

  • Coats and Straps
  • Apron
  • Shoes

Personal

  • Make it half way through my Christmas shopping/making list
Not overly ambitious. Not slacky. Hopefully just right!

What Else?

So that is how my day started off.
You're welcome!

If you're tantrum is so crazy that it looks and sounds as if an exorcism is taking place, clearly your mother is failing you. Some children in this house just might be itching for boarding school! Maybe it's the time of the year, spending more time inside, not enough physical activity, or just unnoticed sensitivities on my part, but tantrums of this nature really worry me. The fact that I wanted to resort to knocking some sense into her really makes me nervous. Thankfully an extra long time out for us both with a nice heart-felt talk seemed to straighten things out. Sadly, I can't even remember the trigger things escalated so quickly.

So on top of failing at motherhood, DH really hammered home this weekend that the world is out to get us. Lucky for me the heart to heart we shared really helped put me in a state of mind to win said fight against the world! So what might not be going right?? Bullet time!
  • DH and I haven't had time together since this summer
  • DH is unhappy at work
  • Family time is lacking with me working
  • The ladies need big girl beds and a room make-over
  • I need a new living room
  • The car occasionally flashes us for no apparent reason
  • The car also developed a new problem and I see dollar signs
  • Christmas is virtually unplanned
  • I'm completely unprepared for the family Christmas party
  • The roof has a leak
  • The boiler isn't working
  • I have too many unfinished projects around the house
  • We still have a mouse
Separately, they're all small potatoes. But one thing after another just gets to be exhausting! Since the time change I have had no energy after we get home in the evenings. There is something about it being dark at 6 o'clock that just sucks the life from me. Am I alone here?

Knowing that DH is fretting has really perked my spirits. I'm still not in the holiday mood, but I do have lists and I'm systematically crossing things off. That will take care of two things on my list. I also have no real desire to travel for Christmas so if no one wants to come here, I'll happily stay in my pajamas all day! I think I just planned Christmas!!

This house hates me, so that is nothing new. I believe the roof is a simple fix, same for the boiler. I have someone come out tomorrow for the boiler, so hopefully we'll have heat! I felt like such an ass telling DH to quit complaining about the house being cold for the last two weeks, I guess it really was cold! I'm half finished painting the living room baseboards, and I hope to drop the girls at my mother's tomorrow if the repair man finishes the boiler early so I can work on them some more.

The car is testing me, but it will go in after Thanksgiving. I have a serious problem fixing random things that may or may not be causing the issue. Hearing other Subaru owners complain of the same problem make me question my loyalty. I know I'm not getting a new living room set, the roof will cancel that out. But the ladies need a new bedroom and I fully support that being a grandparent gift. Especially since my parents are hemorrhaging money to the Devil's spawn. Yes I'm petty, and I know I will be a better person if I let this go but I can't.

DH is unhappy with his job. Not unhappy with the work, but the people. That just leaves me nervous. Must keep the moneymaker happy! I wish I had time to. We haven't be out since August. We just don't have enough time. I feel stretched too thin. I really feel like work is impeding on my family life. How horribly pretentious do I sound?! I can clearly see that working weekends isn't a good fit, but I love money. I've toyed with the idea of opening an etsy shop but I know I don't have the drive or dedication. I also know that ultimately I would end up taking time from the girls or DH to work and be right back to square one. I just need to suck it up and quit. I want to go out with my husband, take spur of the moment trips, and live by the seat of our pants again. I shouldn't have to plan excursions weeks or months in advance.

Lastly, this damn mouse won't go! If you have one you have many, and many we'e caught. I'm convinced that we caught all the babies and the mother mouse is holding out. I believe she broke the boiler to try to freeze us out, attempting to avenge the death of her babies. She's been laying low, but I know she's waiting for me!

Pre-Christmas

It just so happens that I bought myself a pre-Christmas gift. I thought of it as a you-work-hard-all-year-and-should-get-to-enjoy-this-pre-christmas gift. I could argue that I needed a new everyday lens, but in all honesty I just wanted it. DH wanted me to have it. So it was bought!

It arrived with Sandy, and was cracked.
Thus, it was returned.

This was an auction purchase with no returned accepted. Thankfully, after the seller didn't respond, the company saw things my way and offered me a complete refund. Yay money!

However prior to receiving said refund, I made sure a replacement was on it's way.

Isn't she pretty?

I'm over the moon with her, she is big and heavy. She makes me feel important. I hope we will make sweet love photos togethers!

So prepare to be inundated!

I argued that I can use said lens for holiday pictures, the christmas part, and various other things that need photographing. Makes total sense right?? Yes it's totally selfish, but sometimes that's just what you need.

So have you done a self-serving shopping in prep for this holiday season?!

Memories Made

But not the ones I intended!

Just about everyday, around 12:45, we suit up for a walk. The walks used to be exclusively be to the secret forest. Then Sandy uprooted half of the secret forest. So we found a new forest!

Today we christened the new forest.

Nope, that's not dog poo.

What a lovely memory made!

Our first trip to the new forest landed us a view of a small herd of deer, who were no doubt running from the small herd of toddlers after them. Today's trip landed us some fish in the stream, the aforementioned poo, deer and raccoon prints in the river bank, and a snake!

I DON'T do snakes.

I don't even try. It was "Emma come here right now" said in the sternest voice I could muster. The poor neighbor lady was lost as to why I did such an about face. While it was small, and I'm 96.732 percent sure it was harmless, I'm just not up to risking it! The ironic part was just moments before that, as we're crunching through the leaves, I thought to myself- this would be a great place for snakes.

Dear Self,
Stop thinking.
Love,
Me

Here's to a happy weekend!

Post Election and Colors

It's done an over.

We remain a country divided politically. People are so worked up about this and I just don't understand it. Life goes on. It's four years, and if you're that upset that you need to move to Canada I'll gladly help you pack. I find faults with both of the major candidates, so no, Obama did not get my vote. Whether it's a vote waste, or one cast in true belief, I'm just glad it's over. I wish people would worry more about their congressional votes, you know the people who do the law writing who most people don't blink an eye at?! Just a thought...

We took the ladies with us, and I let them each take turns pressing buttons on the screen. They were thrilled to vote, and happily took their stickers. One of which may still be plaster on a dog. I was thankful we went later, there were NO LINES despite record turn outs. We celebrated by going to a questionable establishments that serves chicken, and proceeded to discuss in kid friendly terms that we voted for everyone to have the same rights to marry. HA!

I was very relieved to find that my state approved same-sex marriage. Thrilled even. But what shocked me was that it narrowly passed by less than 100k votes! Get with it people!! Separation of church and state! Do onto others and all that!! Why does the government need to be involved in defining marriage? I just have to share my friend's post on the topic.

If the "old Catholic farts" get it, what's wrong with everyone else?! Sigh...

I could have cared less about the casinos, for I knew the revenue wouldn't be going to schools. Redistricting issues come and go. I supported removing convicted criminals from office. The one that really made me think was tuition for illegal immigrants, but hear me out.

I'm not sure why this is an issue. How many illegal immigrants are petitioning for in-state tuition? Is this some sort of baiting tactic? I clearly didn't do my homework here. I do feel though, that if you're going to give people who aren't here legally the benefit of cheaper tuition, that that benefit should be given to students across the board. So instead of allowing illegal immigrants to obtain in-state tuition rates, you would be introducing flat rate tuition for all students regardless of resident status. And how about instead of making such narrow laws that apply to small segments of the population, you tackle more affordable tuition for the masses by funneling that casino money directly to education?? Money can't fix everything, but it can sure hire more teachers! Smaller class sizes will undoubtedly improve learning, and then maybe we wouldn't need those expensive NCLB tests?? Teachers might be able to teach outside the test again! KIDS MIGHT LEARN! They could even become upstanding, tax paying citizens....crazy I know!

Stepping off that soap box...

I laughed when I read that Marcia's office was swooning over our black President. I laughed because to some people here he is either too black, not black enough, or just right. Apparently people aren't just people. We were watching the new Mumford & Sons video that stars Idris Elba and with the shadowing in the video he does seem to have a rather dark complexion. Emma announces, very plainly, that he is black. I simply agreed with her, and we continued watching. This stuck with me all day. Of course I am just blowing this out of proportion because she is only three, but my children have no diversity in their life. Did I do the right thing by not making a big deal?

I discussed this with the hubs who said I should have used the moment as a springboard into race and equality. That people come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, but that they are all the same. He was also the one the brought to my attention that they are surrounded by only white people. Not that it is intentional, but we just happen to not have a diverse family. We live in a traditionally white part of town. We have a white doctor, a white dentist, and a white mail man. My children are living a lily white existence and I kind of feel like a failure as a mother for not exposing them to some multi-cultural playgroup.

Does race need to be discussed? Does it need to be discussed with a three year old?

I'm at a loss.

Pre-Election

While I do enjoy politics very much, my country mostly saddens and disappoints me. It's not fiercely battled, cunning, or entertaining in the least. It's just this melancholy body of people doing mostly nothing productive. There aren't even baby steps or teasers of progress as I see things. On the whole, I find the American Government horribly ineffective, over bearing, and self-serving.

American Government = Major Let Down

With Election Day tomorrow, I've reached my limit. I've had it with:
  • questionable and obnoxious stickers
  • rallys
  • endless e-mails
  • junk mail
  • signs
  • yard signs
  • people bitching about vandalized yard signs
  • bias coverage
  • polls
Most importantly, I've had it with mud-slinging, misleading, off topic ads and promotions.

I'm over it! I'm done!

So let's all remember to be civil to one and other, remember to vote, and remember...

LOL, I just had to!

Three Blind Mice

Make that dead mice.

Ugh, we've never had mice! Never!

I'm not a fan, but I'm certainly not going all farmer's wife on them. I would just like them to peacefully exit the way the entered. Which, by the way, I am assuming is the basement door I replaced. More weatherstripping!

Kudos to DH. The first one had him a bit shaken by his duty, but I certainly couldn't handle the issue. My way would involve cheese and a one way pvc pipe out the back door. Not, terrible effective. However, he got up to let the dogs out this morning and found not one but TWO MORE MICE! Ack!

Truth be told, if they stayed in the basement I probably wouldn't evict them. However they are in the kitchen and if only one room in my house is clean, it will always be the kitchen. My food is sacred!

As for the ladies, they are clueless. I think I'll keep things that way. I certainly don't want to have the circle of life meets respecting other people's boundaries talk. Is that a thing? Either way, I don't want to explain why these tiny, helpless mice-who are just seeking shelter from the cold and wind- are not welcome in our home. They fell in love with ferrets GROSS! at the pet store and I just know that talk wouldn't go over well!

Giggles on the monitor say nap time, and this post, are over.

Have a great weekend!
