(I feel obligated to say that tadpoles will forever remind me of sperm, forever darting around aimlessly.)
A tiny pond, along side an access road bordering the woods, was squirming with tadpoles in various states. None yet with limbs, but thrilling none the less. We even saw impossibly small tadpoles that only recently hatched. This far surpassed the snails and even the deer spine (ick?!) we came across!
There is a tugging at my conscious here, I desperately want to bottle just a few up to take home and watch grow. Akin to my battle with zoos however, I want to impart on the ladies the importance of respecting nature and animals in their natural habitat. But just think of how fun it would be to watch them morph each day and getting to release them back to their froggy friends!
The lot of them were desperate to catch one, I'm desperate to film them attempting to catch frogs in this mini swamp! I did cave and start catching them for them to gently explore. I think only one was "pet" to death. I hope they'll be this enthused when they start to grow limbs. They spent over an hour in this one spot watching, waiting, touching, and exploring.
I've settled myself that we will be going back every other day to check on our new friends and track their growth. Perhaps I'll make up a lesson for preschool and let them explore this a little more, maybe track down exactly what these are. Or maybe I'll just settle for daily hikes and photo ops with our new found friends.
